Linzer Squares

Ingredients
2 C. flour
1 C. dry bread crumbs
3/4 C. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. grated lemon peel
1 C. butter or margarine
1 egg, slighly beaten
1 can (21oz.) cherry pie filling
Directions
1. Mix together first 5 ingredients.  Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.  Add eggs graduall, tossing with fork until flour mixture is moistened.  
2. Shape dough into ball, flatten slightly.  On lightly floured surface roll 2/3 of dough into 16 x 11 inch rectangle.  Place in ungreased 15x10 inch jelly roll pan (Dough should come up 1/2 inch on sides).  Spread pie filling on dough.
3. Roll remaining dough 1/4 inch thick.  Cut strips 1/2 inch wide.  Crisscross strips over filling; trim to fit.  Press ends to border to anchor them.  Bake in preheated 350 degree oven 35-40 minutes until crust is browned.  Cool in pan and cut into 24 squares.
